Subject: Royal Descent of Thomas Keys, husband of Lady Mary Grey
Date: Wed, 03 Jul 2002 03:11:13 -0400

I was surprised to find a royal descent for Thomas Keys, the MP [1554] from
Kent, who was thrown in the Fleet prison in 1565 by Elizabeth I when she
discovered he had secretly married her cousin Lady Mary Grey, sister to the
unfortunate Lady Jane Grey. He was released in 1568, but forbidden to ever
see his wife, and the Queen never relented and allowed the couple to
reunite. Keys died in Sept. 1571, and his widow Lady Mary asked the Queen
to give her custody of Keys' son and daughter from his first marriage. Lady
Mary (Grey) Keys died in 1578.

Here's the descent:

1)Edward I
2)Joan of Acre
3)Eleanor de Clare, m. Hugh Despenser the Younger
4)Isabel Despenser, m. Richard, Earl of Arundel
5)Sir Edmund d'Arundel
6)Philippa d'Arundel, m. Sir Richard Cergeaux, of Colquite, Cornwall
7)Philippa Cergeaux, b. abt. 1373, m. 1st, Robert Paschle, of Pashley,
Sussex and Evegate, Smeeth, Kent, and d. July 1420.
8)Sir John Passhele, of Pashley & Evegate, d. abt. 31 Hen. VI [C 139/149/26,
Passhele, John, kt: Kent, Sussex, 31 Hen VI]
9)John Passhele, of Pashley & Evegate*, presumably the subject of the PRO
document: "C 1/24/6, John Passhele, esq., son of Sir John Passhele, knt. v.
William Hante and Thomas Bodulgate, esqrs., and Edward Clayton, priest,
feoffees of the said Sir John.: Manors of Thenegate, Pashley in Ticehurst
(Tysherst), Moote, Rigge, and Frenssh Court, with other lands, &c., 32 Hen.
10)Elizabeth Passheley*, m. Reginald Pympe, of Nettlestead, Kent, and d.
abt. 18 Hen. VIII [C 142/45/126, Pympe, Elizabeth: Kent, 18 Hen. VIII]. He
d. abt. 23 Hen. VIII [C 142/52/121, Pympe, Reginald: Kent, 23 Hen. VIII],
and was presumably the subject of the PRO document: "C 1/281/65, Anne Brent,
late the wife of William Passhely, of Smeeth. v. Reynold Pympe, tenant of
the manor of Evegate.: Annuity out of the said manor: Kent."
11)Anne Pympe, m. by 1507, Sir John Scott, of Scot's Hall, Smeeth, Kent, MP
[1512], b. by 1484, d. 7 Oct. 1533.
12)Mildred Scott, m. 1st, John Dygges, of Barrane, Kent; m. 2nd, Richard
Keys, of St. Radigund's, Kent, who d. 1545/6. Mildred survived him.
13)Thomas Keys of St. Radigund's, m. 2nd, Lady Mary Grey, dau. of 3rd
Marquess of Dorset & sister of Lady Jane Grey.

*Need further research to verify the link of these two generations.

HOP does not have any info on Thomas Keys' first wife, or his children by
her. Has anything further on them come to light recently?
