Dear Douglas, Chris, Paul, et al.,

I think the chronology concerning Eleanor de Vitre is a
problematic area yet unresolved. Amongst the disparate
pieces I see at present:

1. The statement in the Lacock record as to the birth
of Ela of Salisbury, her alleged daughter, in 1188.

2. The sequence of her marriages, in particular to
(2ndly, supposedly) Gilbert de Tillieres, and (3rdly
or 4thly, depending) to Gilbert Malesmains.

Among the more interesting connections here is that
Eleanor's daughter Joanna de Tillieres, apparently heiress
(in her issue at least) of her brother Gilbert, was wed to
Thomas Malesmains, son of Gilbert (Malesmains) by a previous
marriage.

Adrian noted previously that Nicholas Malesmains,
grandson of Eleanor de Vitre by this marriage, divided the
manor of Cooling with Ela, Countess of Salisbury in 1233
[1]. Perhaps the proof lies somewhere in that pudding.

Good luck, and good hunting.
