Dear Newsgroup,
Thank you for all your postings re. the above discussion.
Firstly, the sources for my research are as follows:-
'I am trying to ascertain whether Adelaide was sister or half-sister to
William I, and who were the parents of Matilda, Countess of Huntingdon?'
Source: 'Burkes Genealogical & Heraldic History of the Peerage Baronetage
and Knightage - 104th Edition Published 1967 MCMLXVII - The Royal Lineage' -
P.lxxviii - Footnote: *Harlette m. Harlevin, Seigneur de Conteville, and by
him had issue, 1. Eudo, Bishop of Bayeux, Earl of Kent and Regent of
England, d. on crusade at seige of Antioch, 1096.
2. Robert, Count of Mortagne.
3. Adelaide, m. Waltheof, Earl of Huntingdon (beheaded, 1075), and
had issue, an only dau.,
Matilda, Countess of Huntingdon, .....................
Some sources state that Adelaide married Waltheof, Earl of Huntingdon (beh.
1075) and had a daughter, Matilda, Countess of Huntingdon. (see above
quote).
Other sources state that it was Judith (daughter of Adelaide) who married
Earl Waltheof and had a daughter, Matilda, Countess of Huntingdon.
Source: Dictionary of National Biography P.267 - Under Waltheof - 'William
gave him to wife his niece Judith, a daughter of his sister Adelaide, by
Enguerrand, count of Ponthieu, and in 1073............'.
Were Adelaide's parents - Harlette (William I's mother) and Harlevin,
Seigneur de Conteville? This would make William and Adelaide half-brother
and half-sister, respectively.
There appears to be some confusion with the two Stephen's - Stephen or
Etienne d'Aumale and Stephen or Etienne of Blois appear to be two different
characters from the research I have done. I have them down as 2nd Counsins
with their common ancestor being Eudes II 2m. Ermengarde dau. of Cte. Robert
I d'Auvergne. Am I correct in this? Or are they really the same person?
Bye for now,
Penelope
