Dear Leo,

I am aware of the marriage (or alleged marriage) of Neil,
Earl of Carrick, to a daughter of Walter the Steward. There are
two problems with this connection, however:

1. The pedigree of the Stewarts in SP identifies her
as " Margaret, who is said to have been married to
Nigel or Neil of Galloway, Earl of Carrick ." [1]
I don't have a note as to who/what this was said
by, but this is not a strong statement for SP
to make.

2. If this marriage is correct, and (bigger if)
Marjory, daughter of Neil of Carrick and wife
(2ndly) of Robert de Brus, earl of Carrick (de
jure uxoris) (d. 1304), was the daughter of this
Margaret Stewart, the marriage of Walter Stewart
and Marjory Bruce ca. 1315 would have required
a dispensation, to-wit:

Walter le = Beatrix of
Stewart I Angus
______________________I______
I I
Alexander le Stewart Margaret = Neil of = ?
I I
I I
James le Robert de = Marjory
Stewart Brus (d.1304) I of Carrick
I I
I King Robert I [ _the_ Bruce ]
I____________ ________I
I I
Walter Stewart = Marjory Bruce

This relationship would have then been in the 3rd and 4th
degrees of consanguinity, requiring a dispensation. I am not
aware of any reference to such a dispensation, for what is one
of the most noticed marriages in Scots history. Based on the
foregoing, I have indicated in my notes that (A) the marriage of
Neil of Carrick and NN le Stewart occurred, but (B) Marjory of
Carrick was the daughter of another (likely second) wife of Neil
of Carrick.

If anyone has reference to the account for Walter the
Stewart in Scots Peerage (probably around I:14 or so), perhaps
there's a detail there I'd missed. However, it seems otherwise
unlikely that Margaret Stewart was great-grandmother of Marjory
Bruce.

Cheers,

John *
