The second marriage is that of the progenitors of the earls of
Crawford. The marriage was in 1358 between Catherine Stirling of
Glenesk and Sir Alexander Lindsay, second son but heir of Sir David
Lindsay of Crawford (see RMS charter 1 Oct 1358). Glenesk was a vast
estate earlier held by an important native family, who may well have
been lineally succeeded by the Stirlings. Moncrieffe of that Ilk has
the interesting suggestion that the individual known as Sir John de
Striveling de Morref, who sealed the Ragman Roll with six stars of six
points, may well be the father, which suggests that perhaps the line
passed through the Murrays, especially as he seals with the Murray
stars.
I have no details of the origins of the Stirlings of Kerse, but the
Mentieths of Kerse are prominent in the C15.
