Subject: Digby question: Katherine (Digby) Umfreville (say 1575-aft.1641)
Date: Thu, 12 Aug 2004 10:48:06 -0700

If anyone has any thoughts or information on the followng, I would be
most grateful.

In my article "The English Origin of John Umfreville of New Haven,
Connecticut," The American Genealogist 72 (January 1997), I
established the patrilineal ancestry of New Haven, Connecticut settler
John Umfreville / Humphreville (1630-al.1720). In so doing, it was
discovered that John's paternal grandmother was a certain Katherine
(Digby) Umfreville (say 1575-aft 1641), wife of Gervase Umfreville, of
Ewell, Surrey.

I did not pursue Katherine (Digby) Umfreville's ancestry in this
article, although the following bare facts are known:

1) KATHERINE DIGBY, born say 1575, died after 1641, probably at Ewell,
Surrey, married about 1600 to GERVASE UMFREVILLE, born say 1570, died
before 1634, probably at Ewell, Surrey. [TAG 72:16-17].

2) JOHN DIGBY, bonr about 1530, died after 1580, probably at London or
at Ravenstone, Derbyshire. He married 12 November 1571 at St Stephen
Coleman St., London to
3) URSULA HALFHIDE. [TAG 72:16-17; St Stephen Coleman Street PR; Middle
Temple Records (1904), p. 81]

4) HENRY DIGBY, born say 1485, died probably either at London or at
Tichmarsh, Northamptonshire. On 2 June 1526 in London, he was married to

5) MARGARET TRICE. [TAG 72:17, n. 14; Boyd, Percival, Citizens of
London (typescript), # 41276; Harleian Society 25:5 (1887); P.C.C.
Fettiplace; St Martin in the Fields PR]

8) BENJAMIN DIGBY, died in 1532 in the parish of St Dionis Backchurch,
London, he married
9) KATHERINE ---. [P.C.C. Thrower; Vis. Norf.; Boyd, Citiznes of
London, # 41276]

16) EVERARD DIGBY, died probably at Stoke Dry, Durham [Vis. Norf.;
Boyd, Citizens of London, # 41276]
