There were different kinds of slavery.....chattel, where the slave
is actual property of the owner,which is what most people today
associate with the word.....debtor, where the person wasn't actual
property, but had to work the debt and fines, etc off....indentured
servitude, which was for a set period. Many of the non-African slaves
fell into the two latter groups...as did some of the Africans.'
There are others...everyone in the Ottoman Empire was technically a
slave except the Sultan...in sub-Saharan Africa, a slave was often
someone who did not belong to the local tribe/group.
Many today would consider serfdom to be slavery. My rambling point
is that "slave" doesn't always mean "slave".
