This is an example of a speculation or guess that is not supported by
a complete and continuous paper track (for one, sources show at the
source of Meherenc family a Bouchard family living in a place named
Meherenc) that could be proven/disproven by DNA analysis. We have
descendants from both lines (Norway and France) and both are male
lines. So, ask them to prove they are related by DNA and then it will
be more than speculation based on a name (and even on a name not in
use in the earlier times).

You think in the wrong orders. The rich dealers chosen to become
protestant and not the protestants could become rich dealers.
The Templar order was catholic and created some kind of banking
system...
Catholic church forbids poors to become rich, not catholics to become
rich. There is a lot of catholics that were very powerfull years
before Calvin or Luther were born.

You just forget a very important fact. Family names begun in the
1300s. In Norway, the concept was different since they were using
farm name instead of personal family name, i.e. you had someone from
a place and said from that place. This is similar to something we
have in French for pre-1300 names.
To make yourself an idea of the old names, check the various lists of
bishops. They are not too hard to find and this will give you a list
of people from many social level. You will see that in early years
commoners had no family name, but noble had a land name, and slowly,
everybody got a family name.
