He can be. His ancestry is not complete and one line can't be found.
So there can be a bastard in that missing line.

The original contract identify exactly the family, so in that
part, the House of Menteith of Kerse is positively identified :
... de la maison des Comtes de monteth & Baron de Carsa ...

Check yourself ! While I have not yet searched all the possible
ancestry, I have a list of Quebec royal lines in my site at

http://www.francogene.com/gfna/gfna/998/qrd30.htm

and a list of Scottish ancestry (far from complete and for noble
ones, I have not yet indicated some country) at

http://www.francogene.com/quebec--genealogy/places/990132s.php

which has nothing before 1600... I think this would be the only
Scottish royal or noble roots and it is not listed because the
list is based on the (presumed if not known) place of marriage
and without parents in his case, Jean de Menteith is not there.

Since I have not yet included all the possible ancestry for all
nobles nor all royal descents, I can't check my own database.

Please note that "Quebec" is more exactly the former diocese of
Quebec which included Louisiana and Acadia.
