Are you sure that this is the same family? I think Johnston and
Johnstone are two distinct families. There is no indication in the
ODNB biographies of your James Johnston or his father that they are
connected to the Johnstone family. In fact quite the opposite, as his
father's family are said to be lawyers and merchants of Edinburgh.
