Hi Raymond Montgomery --

At 3:34 PM -0500 3/19/97, you wrote in part:

>>Was looking at some census records and came across the term "DRAYMAN"
>>and was wondering what does it mean or if the spelling is correct in the
>>census data.

'Tis a man who drives a dray.

{CHUCKLE}

Fearing that that may not be sufficient,

a dray is/was a low sturdily built cart with detachable sides, for carrying
heavy loads.

Could also be the verb *to dray* which was the act of driving of the cart.
And finally, drayage is the charge for commercially driving such a cart.

RECOMMENDATION to all genealogists and particularly newbies --

keep your eyes open for garage sales which have books for sale and latch
onto an old -- the older the better -- dictionary. The one which furnished
the answer above cost 50 cents several yhears ago -- the price is still
noted inside the cover -- is about seventy years old. It is a lifesaver for
terms which are no longer common.

Good luck and good hunting,

Mark Merritt

Hello

Can anyone tell me how to put multiple listings of email addresses in
Netscape? I would like to have one name to highlight for several people I
am sharing information with.

Thank you.

Hi
I get about 130 messages a day. It would be great if you could list your
names in the subject line. I've read other people making the same
suggestion. I think that's why she suggested doing it this way.

Thanks a lot & GOOD LUCK!! (You're braver than I am--I haven't listed any
yet)

Can some of you Newbies tell me when we shifted from digest mode? I used to
be able to down load the digest and look at it later with my xtree program.
I could also save all of the good web sites that people offered with out
having to write them down. I thought maybe when I changed servers it was
just different but I just subscribed to RootsL and they have the digest
mode. It sure is easier when you dont have to delete 75 or 80 e-mail
messages.

Thanks Larry -- I think this is a superb project the school/s are doing --
it would be nice if all the schools did this.

I like it so much that I am going to forward this to a couple of other mail
lists -- there are lots of teachers and students alike who browse these --
maybe more can suggest to the schools this idea.

And, don't forget the old age and retirement communities/homes. Many times
when I get stuck (names, pictures with no names, etc) I will go visiting
persons who I do not even know but who lived in the area when my relatives
were there -- you would not believe the memories of so many of them, the
really fantastic stories they give me (I always take a tape recorder), the
amount of help they have given me, and the wonderful friends I have made
this way. Many of these persons get few or no letters and visitors each
year -- they welcome these visits. Of course, you want to check with the
persons in charge to be sure that it is okay to visit them -- that it won't
tire them too much. Find a place (day room, outside patio in summer, etc)
where you both are comfortable. And, if there are any who have to stay in
their room get permission to visit with them.

Thanks again, Larry -- these young adults I am sure have been influenced for
life.

You received one of the best. The reason you don't read much about
Reunion here on this list is that they have their own list which is well
supported by the Leister people. The "ReunionTalk" newsletter is an
electronic mailing list created to provide a forum for Reunion users to
discuss their experiences, questions, suggestions, comments, and ideas
pertaining to the Reunion software by Leister Productions Inc. To obtain

I have pulled these messages to point out a problem many newbies seem to
have a first not to embarass or flame the parties involoved.
The problem IMHO is that they don't have their e-mail set to wrap the
words. When reading the messages it takes unnecessary time and printing
the messages also takes a resetting of the printer to get all the info.
Don't be embarassed, we have all done it when we started. I am just
passing along a suggestion. Happy hunting. :)

I'm editor of a weekly newspaper and wondered if newbies were aware that
most small town papers are happy to print letters to the editor from
someone seeking information about an ancestor connected with their
readership area, usually county.
The letters would probably need to be by snail mail because the
majority of weekly/bi-weekly papers are not online.
I'm new to genealogy and the internet but was delighted to find the
GenWeb page on my county. This week I published the queries from people
seeking info about relations in our area (after contacting each of them
to tell them what I was doing). Several of the surnames they were
seeking were common here and the article was the talk of the coffee shop
hangouts the next day! I'm hoping to get feedback on any successful
connections.
Anway, hope this is a useful idea.
Happy Rooting!
