Most privately printed books go one of several ways:

1- they hire someone to print this book; when they do this the
publisher/printer usually gets an isdn # (I may have word wrong -- might not
be isdn) but anyway they get one and sometimes get a copyright on it. These
private printers/publishers often publish lists, although not all of them do.

2-many who write and print will send a copy to one or all of the following
places: county historical society, county genealogical society, county or
state public library -- both for where major ancestors lived and where the
author currently lives, the Salt Lake City LDS library, the Library of
Congress/National Archives.

3-relatives often get these as presents or purchase theirs

4-distributed at family reunions for free or a price

5-offered in genealogical magazines and newsletters of surname they searched.

These places and sometimes the persons (like a relative died and spouse not
related) usually keep the copy but sometimes they will sell or give the copy
to a library or bookstore. (I know our public libraries here will give or
sell for cheap books that are duplicates, etc).

With these "leads" you can check at the libraries (use both university and
public ones as each has different databases) and ask them to go through
their computers and see where the nearest location of the book is. If they
don't have anything in the computer -- check and see if the Library of
Congress has any copies or microfilms of book that can be interlibrary
loaned (usually for a fee, though). Write or call the different libraries
where they may have donated or sold book and see if they have it (like LDS,
county library, etc.). Ask aroiund and put out messages on the internet
(like queries page of the USGenWeb for the state and counties where they
lived), on listservs for that county, surname, and state, etc.

And the one I usually have BEST luck with -- ask the library or person where
you found the name of the book to look inside the book and see if it has an
address for the author, for the publisher, publisher's name, etc -- and call
or write both the publisher and author!!!

Hopefully you will find them. Glad you didn't have any problems finding
these names -- BUT -- did you remember to look up the variation spellings of
the name? Many persons forget this and find that there are other books out
there where a person changed name spelling, and a descendant is writing your
family history under a different spelling (for instance our SANDAGE I have
found in SANDIDGE, and SANDREDGE spelled books, etc.)

What works for me: (again, it depends on what you really want to do)

I run W95, Netscape 2.0, Word 7.0.

I my bookmark file ("bookmark.htm") using Word. An excerpt of the file
looks something like this:

<DT><A HREF="http://www.generationjourney.com/";
ADD_DATE="837549487" LAST_VISIT="844129671"
LAST_MODIFIED="837549481">Generation Journey: A Kit to Connect

LAST_VISIT="845423033" LAST_MODIFIED="823193653">National Genealogical
Society - Home Page</A>

As you can see, embedded in all of this junk (that only a computer could
love) are the actual bookmarks that we mere mortals covet. A little
Word processing would then obtain the desired results. (Note, you may
want to immediately do a "Save As" to prevent overwriting these hot
commodities)

I have read information about several programs, I bought "Family Tree"
but couldn't load in on my computet. It's seems that a power surge that
wiped out my hard disk, (I had it restored), also had damaged the coil
in the power unit so I couldn't load the program.

I downloaded a shareware file Brother's Keeper from the net which I like
and has similar geatures to the program I bought. Brother's Keeper can
scan in pictures, creates several type of charts and has programming to
record more than one marriage for either spouse. It can be found on
web.wingsbbs.com/brotherskeeper/ and the contact is John Steed. I have
also found in through several shareware locations and by searaching for
"brothers keeper" on Alta Vista. I hope this helps.

Though I have not put any GEDCOM translated to HTML on the WWW. I have
tried Stark's GED2HTML windows based program and works great for me. It
allows you to customize the ancestral tree to be 2, 3, 4 or more (but
then the files become quite large and slow to load). Keep in mind that
people are looking for both fast loading info and as much as you can
give them (a balancing act).

I had forgotten how to do this, I was dropped of the list, when the
Roots-L made some changes. I looked up the Roots-L Homepage
(www.rootsweb.com/roots-l/roots-l.html). Also you can find if you have
been dropped from the list by sending to -- and
in the body of the mail just sent "Query Roots-L" (no quotes, please, no
signature file), and you should receive a response soon. If you have
been dropped just subscribe again, but check your mail later in the day
or the next day, because the list needs a second verification sent to
put you on the list. Hope this helps.

I use PAF and have FTM. I use Netscape Mail. Many people want family
group records or certain pedigree charts. I would like a simple way to
send them just a chart without having to type the whole thing up or go
make a gedcom and attach it. It would be nice to just be able to use a
copy-paste procedure to send them the information they are asking for.

I want to take a moment and respond to some of what Judith says. Almost every
genealogy program has a Notes section. In fact, I don't know of any program that
doesn;t have one. The Notes section is also transferred in GEDCOM files. You may
need to be careful of the version of GEDCOM you are using when transferring
files as a GEDCOM file created with version 5 of GEDCOM will not transfer Notes
to a program that doesn't recognize the modification in the new GEDCOM version.
Family Tree Maker can create GEDCOM files using both versions 4 and 5 of GEDCOM.
To be safe, use version 4.

Some alternatives to GED2HTML:

Elaine Johnson () has designed a very nice visual
display of a traditional pedigree chart with HTML coding:

http://www.ida.net/users/elaine/pedigre2.htm

All you have to do is copy the source to her page and plug in your names.

And if you want a very simple, text-only way to display generations of
families, you're welcome to copy the format that my cousin Faye Moran and I
are using in our web pages:

I don't know what FTM has, so my reponse may not be of help.

...but just in case, with Family Origins for Windows, I do a "book" report
(FOW lets you mark the individuals or families on which you want to do the
"book"), save it as text, open it with my word processor (sometimes I
"doctor" it a little by adding or deleting or reformatting--usually I do
very little of this), then cut and paste it into an e-mail message. I don't
have to do any typing to format the sentences; FOW does that automatically.

This is one example of a very un"doctored" request I sent out recently:

FIRST GENERATION

1. James S. Sutton was born on 25 Aug 1795. He died on 5 Apr 1864. He was
buried in Cornwell, Sutton, Cartwright Cemetery, Smith Co, TN.

He was married to Mary F. Cornwell (daughter of Millie). Mary F. Cornwell
was born about 1792. James S. Sutton and Mary F. Cornwell had the following
children:

+2i.James Tyrel Sutton.
+3ii.Martha Sutton.
+4iii.Mahala Sutton.
+5iv.Sarah Elizabeth (Betsy) Sutton.
+6v.Johnson Sutton.
+7vi.Campbell Sutton.

SECOND GENERATION

(Birthdate and other information is given for the persons above, and so on.)

Good luck,

Can someone tell me how to Copy and Paste something from within
Family Origins 5? If I want to transfer something from there to an email, how would I go about it? I can't seem to find a menu that has
these commands and no manual was sent with my program. Also, I can't seem to find this addressed in the "online" help.

My mail program is Microsoft Exchange so Netscape answers won't help, I don't think, as we seem to have different options. I also have
Windows 95 as my platform.

I use netscape mail as well. To send information 1) Copy the information
into a file, Word, wp5.1, etc and save it. 2) minimise the file. 3) Call
up your mail. 4) Now maybe the tricky part. (Windows 3.1 you need to
minimise all the Netscape windows to get to the saved file. Windows NT
and maybe windows 95 have a minimise bar at the bottom of the screen you
can click.) 5) maximise the file window, highlight and instruct a copy
command, minimise the file again. 6) maximise the Netscape Mail, click
into the missage window and Paste the file.

I do this a lot, even highlight the addresses I want to sent to from my
mail when the address is all I want, It usually works well, if not
delete and start again. The reason I minimize all the screens I am
using is that if I make a mistake and must find the file again it is
available. I also use the "HELP" function a lot on my programs, but
sometimes I cannot find exactly what I am searching or I cannot
understand what it means. So I try again, to find the information I
want. and sometimes on a suceeding try I either find exactly what I want
or realize the information I need is there, but I didn't understand it
the first time I read the file. Good luck

Outch - Yes I have done this before, but use some sort of pressure pack
electronics cleaner and give it a good spray AFTER you pull it apart.
Let it dry, and do it again to make sure.

After it's dry put it back together and give it a try out - You may have
to then work on a few keys that you didnt get quite right the first
time.

Whatever you do DONT put the electronic board under water! The boards
can absorb water and simply short out and never work again. The keys and
case can be washed in water if you really need to (But make sure they
are dry before putting them anywhere near the circuit board!)

Excuse me for butting in, but, Eudora does not have a spell checker -- at
least Eudora Light doesn't. However, I found a very excellent e-mail spell
checker: "E-mail Spell checker" put out by Digital Systems Research. The
spell checker is on CD-ROM. I found it in a special "Computer Display Case,"

to load and does an excellent job with both Netscape and Eudora mail. I
can't remember exactly what I paid for it, but it was under $20 Canadian.

Ginny,

I don't know if you read my previous message about this--it is entirely
possible that I didn't make sense!

Anway, make a report (use the report menu), make all your decisions (how
much info you want, if you want notes included, etc.), click on OK. When
the print dialog box pops up, change the default from screen/printer to
ascii text file (.txt). Be sure to do this before clicking on OK in that
box, or you will have to start all over again.

If you're like me, you may need to write down the directory and file name
that you give it...

Then start your word processing program, and open the file (this is why you
need to know what you called it). Now you can copy and paste it into an
e-mail message.

One thing I discovered is that if you think you want to look it over first
and choose print to screen, once you're through looking, all your parameters
are canceled and you have to start from scratch. (If someone knows a way to
keep this from happening, please let me know!) If you're doing a pretty
involved report, it's better to save it as a text file first and check it
with your word processor. I don't like having to go through the boolean
sorts all over again.

Let me know if this doesn't make sense or if you need more detail--
