Most state archives now have a basic home page on the internet, but
not an exhaustive data set for research. In South Carolina for
example, there is a neat collection of old photographs, an overview
of the holdings, and hours of operation, but the majority of what is
in the state archives is all handwritten and not even indexed
extenisvely. For example, the bibliographic entry for the county of
Aiken, SC consists of "3000 cubic feet of loose papers dating from
1870." Now doesn't that sound like a great gold mine just waiting
for us genealogist's to dive into. (grin)
One of the objectives of the USGenWeb Project is to get this source
material on line. Our archives are organized by state and type of
record and may be reached on line at

Enjoy!
