I have been trying to locate one, but so far no luck -- but, with so much
going CD and online maybe we will eventually see it. If anyone has found
the civil service retiree/death lists or any railroad retiree lists I would
sure like to know about it, as I am sure we all would. Same with the
military retirees, although since they are under Social Security (started in
1950 I think it was -- but memory may be wrong on this date) I am pretty
sure they would be on, but the pre-Social Security ones shouls still have a
list out there somewhere, one would think.

I do know that if you send the social security and/or military number, name
of person, last place you think he/she served, and anything else you think
could be pertinent, and send with a letter inside (sealed, with only your
return address on the outside) to the place that handles the specific
military group (I only know Air Force is Randolph AFB) then they will
forward your letter to the person's last known address. It is great for
finding lost "buddies", But that doesn't help us with the deceased or our
genealogical research.

During my research I have come across a paper signed by the sheriff which
states that my ancestor was being liberated from custody by virtue of a
pardon issued by Governor of the Commonwealth (PA) - any ideas on where I
might start to search to see if I can find out if this is real and what he
might have done to need a pardon - it is dated June 1872.

This Newbie had previously subscribed to NOR CAL which I eventually noticed
was for pretty much what it said; Northern Calif. I wrote and asked about
the central Calif. area and was told I needed FAR WEST ROOTS. I wrote to

back an error message ( 3 pages) from Maiser, that did not really explain
what I, personally, had done wrong.

Does anyone know the address for FAR WEST ROOTS?

(Yes, I'm new to this list, my Window's 95, research on the computer and
on-line searching. I have been working on my genealogy off and on for 20
years or so [mostly talking to family members, looking up dc's etc] and I'm
either doing something wrong with my computer searches or the downtown

Hi Bonnie,

Here is a copy of part of the message I got back from MAISER
when I was looking for a list. If you send a message to

and ask for LIST@.TXT, it will send you all the genealogy lists
and how to subscribe to them.

Phil
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------

Because the files had grown so large, they are now split into 5 files.

LIST1.TXT General interest files; non-genealogy

LIST2.TXT Genealogy files but not family (e.g., state lists)

LIST3.TXT Family files; families A - E (first letter of last name)

LIST4.TXT Family files; families F - N (first letter of last name)

LIST5.TXT Family files; families O - Z (first letter of last name)

Send for them by sending a message to

SEND LIST1.TXT
SEND LIST5.TXT

You may send for more than one at once, one per line, with no empty lines
between them (as shown above).

YOU MUST SPELL THE FILE NAME EXACTLY AS SHOWN HERE: LIST3.TXT is not the same
as
List-3.text!

His name is William Brazzell and wife Mary??

A cuz had sent me info about this ( it was given to her by another cuz) and

proved. She lists this tax list as part of her proof. How do I find it and
would it give spouse name and childrens names?

The town was listed because that last ($250 I think it is) went to someone
who had that town as an address. It may have been the attorney or executor
of her estate, it may have been an assignment to a mortitian who works 30
miles away, but lives in that town, it could have been an assignment to the
headstone maker, or anyone that accepted this assignment as partial payment
for their services (which then the executor of estate signs the papers,
sends to social security, and then social security sends last check to that
address).

But, this is all assumption going on what my sister and I found out about
this social security check and assigning it to someone else (at the time of
my mother's death) -- the only REAL answer will come when you request the SS
records for your grandmother and look at the xerox of the form requesting
the last payment.

Hi all,

When my mother died this past December--I thought I would receive the
death payment. Wrong. SS changed the rules and only give it to the
surviving spouse now. So I guess she will be listed in the SSDI
eventually.

Also researching my children's paternal line --some of them were farmers
when SS was in force and they are not found on SSDI. I am assuming
since the did not draw SS is the reason they are not listed.

I am not sure when the farmers had to pay SS but at the beginning they
did not have to participate (pay) And if you didn't put in you could not
take out. When SS was started not everyone was included.

Anyone who did not pay into social security isn't eligible to receive it
unless their spouse was eligible to receive it (or a former spouse of 10 or
more years of marriage).

Self-employed who did not pay in, farmers, and many other persons are in
this group of non-Social Security payees (or is it payors??? english isn't
my forte).

BUT, just because they did not receive social security does not mean they
are NOT on any of the USGovt's lists. Check in the area they were farmers
and see if you can't find a grange or other organization they belonged who
would have old lists of members, applications, etc. Check the farm bureau
records for locality (like township), county, state and USGovt!!! -- Many
farmers received checks EACH MONTH in exchange for growing specific crops,
for NOT growing specific crops, and for supporting the government with farm
goods during the different periods of history (depression, wars, droughts,
etc) as well as for the government being allowed to use their lands for
government's use (like for the missile silos, radar dishes, etc).

Yes, possible, I read that Halbert's had been prevented from doing
business in the US location by court order. The probable just moved.
A possible use of their lists. A cousin ordered the book on his name,
xeroxed the pages for an area he wanted to search, and sent the book
back. They sent him his refund. He then wrote or phoned the people in
the book to find anyone who could assist him in his research in that
area. We have the "white pages" on the internet to look up phone lists
of a name in a state or city, and the SSI index where we can look up a
surname for possible research, We probably don't need to use this method
to find names of people in an area now.

Thanks.
