I told this on another List, and will tell it here then get to bed
before my husband unplugs my computer and hides the cord!
When a small child living in Atlanta our family visited relatives in the
country. Having never seen a real live fruit tree I really wanted to
pick one of the pears! I was told they were green and I couldn't have
one.
Well, that was a red flag to a 7 yr old who was obsessed with that
loaded pear tree. So I got a butcher knife, hid it in the folds of my
dress and slipped out the back door. I picked my pear and went into the
cornfield directly behind the backyard.
Once hidden from the grownup and looking at my knife and pear.. I didn't
know how to use a knife much less peel a pear. So, I held the pear
straight out, the knife straight up ... and brought it down hard on the
pear with a lot of force. Thank goodness I didn't chop off a finger or
hand, but I did cut into my left knee. You never saw so much blood!
You know, I don't remember being scolded at all. My uncle said he could
stop the bleeding (no hospitals/doctors around). He went to the corners
of all the rooms gathering spider webs and headed for me. I was as
scared of that hand all covered with spiderwebs as I was of all the
blood pouring from my knee!
He put them all on the open wound (I'd turned my head 'cause Mama said I
had to let him, and Daddy said he'd whip me if I tried to get away). It
worked! When he took the rag and spiderwebs away the next day there was
a FLY in the webs! THAT was the shocker!
There really is something in spider webs that stops blood I was told,
but off hand I can't remember what it is. Jeanette in GA/USA
