Subject: Social Death Index Dates-Need Info

I access the Social Security Death Index often. I know SS started about
1935. It seems like I read somewhere on the Web, that the dates of the
Social Security Death Index only start from sometime in the 60's. Does
anyone know if this is correct? I have found a lot of ancestors on the
SSDI, but a lot of people that I feel probably had an SS number, like my
grandmother who passed in 1947 are not listed. All the people I have found
died in the 70's, 80's and 90's. If the 60's is correct does anyone know
why the earlier dates are not listed back to 1935?
Thank you,
