Subject: Subject: "RSL" Information (fwd
Hi all,
I have been asked to post this information again and I do it with
pleasure as it is one facility that really works! Britt Lux
Hi All,
I recently received severtal requests for information about the "RSL"
or the Roots Surname List" Ordinarily I would direct this reply to the
ones that requested the information and spare the rest of the list, but I
think this information will be of interest to many others.
The first thing to note is that it is not a "mail list" nor a "news
group". It is a facility for posting any surnames that you have
information on and are willing to share. Usually the posters also want
more information so it is a two way street.
Once posted, the information will remain available for one year,
unless the poster asks to have it removed. At the end of a year, one will
have option of continuing it for another year.
Besides the Surname itself, information on the "time line" is
required, [That may not be the best description but will have to do] In
other words, What is the earliest date that you have information on
someone with that surname?, and what is the latest, like "Now" for
instance.
You are also asked to give the migration of the family. Where they
were at the earliest date and where the traveled between there and the
last date. You will be asked to give a short "tag" 8 letters or less. In
as much as the space available to enter the data is limited, It is a good
idea to use a short one. {I use lux] If the tag you choose is taken or
you do not indicate one, One will be assigned, so you may want to chose
some alternates.
The advantages of using the RSL to list your "surnames" are, First:
Once posted, it will be there as long as you want it to be, You will not
have to depend on someone seeing your post on a mail list or a news group
on the day you post it. And then repost it again and again and again.
You will be able to check on who else is interested in that surname
even if they do not subscribe to the mail list you do.
As the information that is posted to the RSL is quite brief, you can
rapidly decide if that poster is likely to be interested in the same
family line that you are.
Once you decide that the is a possible match, you can e-mail the
poster with some additional data. This should be limited to that which is
desired to determine the likely hood of a match. Do not do as some that
responded to my post, give a long list of names and ask them to determine
if they have any of them. Usually one individual [or a married couple]at
the beginning or end of your tree branch.
One last Tip: Do not send your note to multiple addresses, I learned
that some people automatically ignore these broadcasts. Even if you send
the same text to a number of people, only address one person on each note.
If you have Web access you can find more data at:
http://www.smartlink.net/~leverich/family.readme.html#Submit
This actually gets you to the middle of the description file, at
the "how to submit point" but I am sure you can find your way to the top.
If someone gets the correct IRL they can send it to me for my records.
If you do not have access to the Web, then use E-Mail and in the
words of The Host, Karen, "Send any message at all to
. No funky commands or anything, and you can have a
sig file as long as the Mississippi River, it doesn't matter... --Karen"
but I do think the message should state that you want information on RSL.
If you do not get satisfaction send e-mail to me using
[] or [] without the brackets.
Yours Britt Lux

Subject: Hello
Hello everyone. My name is Barb (I am Dennis Slaby's girlfriend) and I
can be reached at his email address. I am very new to computers and hope
that it will be useful in my genealogy search for my mom's biological
family. She was born in 1927 in Mishawaka, Indiana. She was placed in an
orphanage in the early 1930's, and later into foster care with Harvey
and Mable Veon. We have no idea where her real family is. The orphanage
she was at was destroyed by fire years ago (it also served as the
courthouse at that time) and all the records were destroyed. Her birth
name was "Stella" and her last name was of Polish origin (I have about
10-15 different possible spellings). One of her sisters was in a beauty
pagent at the Chicago World Fair. One brother was in the military. And
one brother (possibly the same one) was adopted by a family from
Arkansas. Her biological father was an alcoholic and very abusive. He
burned the backs of her legs with a box of matches one night (when she
was four years old) and told her that it was "to teach her a lesson". My
mom just turned 70 on Valentines day. I would love to find her family
(mainly her siblings) for her. But I have very little to go on. Her
foster parents changed her first name from "Stella" to "Rosella". They
gave her Feb. 14 as her birthday. The state of Indiana has no birth
record on her (I tried to find one through their birth/death records
department). Any suggestions or ideas? Please contact me. thanks-Barb

Subject: Technical Stuff
Hello Newbies,
I need assistance with receiving email that has the following message
encoded in it:
content type: application/octet-stream;
name="STEVCASE.DOC"
content-transfer-encoding: base 64
The mail I received I wish to view. The document was typed in MS Word. I'm
using Microsoft Exchange Ver 4, Windows 95, and my word processor is Microsoft
Works. Is there a way I can save the email file to view it in another
application? I've tried saving as text, but that didn't to do. TIA for any
assistance - I've had this situation many times already, but don't know how to
handle it.

Subject: mailing newsgroups
Why when I unsub from mailing newsgroups do I still get mail from the
newsgroups? It is less mail but I still get mail from CANADIAN-ROOTS,
NEW-BRUNSWICK-ROOTS, GENMTD-L, ONTARIO-CANADA-ROOTS, NORTHWEST-ROOTS,
MANITOBA-ROOTS, LOYALISTS-IN-CANADA etc. I have unsubbed from these
newsgroups. Would like to go on holidays sometime and get caught-up on my
e-mail responses. Can't do that if I am still getting as much as 57 e-mails
a day. Don't want my Service Providor to get annoyed with me if I come home
to close to a 1,000 e-mails stored for my mail box. Sincerely; Alberta
Frey.
[This was sent to the -request address so was delayed. Reminder: to
post to GEN-NEWBIE, send your messages to .
But as long as I'm here, I think I know the answer to this question.
Alberta, when a message is received for a mailing list, the software
looks up who is subscribed to the mailing list at that moment and
directs that copies of that message be sent to all those addresses.
Sometimes, especially on a system with heavy traffic (as is true for
the site that hosts the lists you name above), the system will get
behind on sending mail out and some of the mail gets set aside to
be sent when things are less busy. Your unsubscribe message arrives
meanwhile, and you're removed from the mailing list. But in those
messages that were set aside for later are some that were intended
for you, so when the system is able to work off its backlog, you'll
still be sent those. That is, those messages arrived for distribution
before you sent in your unsubscribe, they just weren't sent out until
later. Oh, the other thing I didn't say clearly -- it doesn't
necessarily work off the backlog in order. So you might receive the
acknowledgement of your unsubscription request hours before receiving
messages that were sent hours earlier... --Karen]

Jason, Judith, Susan, Mary, and anyone else who answered my plea for help:
Thank you. I lucked out this time and my friend resent the file in text
format. I would still like to know why there is no way to save this file in
another format and then process it! How annoying!
Thanx again!

I just subscribed to this service last night without ever seeing it so I
don't know if I'm suppose to answer your question or not (or if I really
understand it). But I'll take a shot at it anyway...There are branches of
the National Archives in different places across the country. I'm in Seattle
& we go there during the week, sign up for a microfiche reader & then use the
indexes to figure out where our microfilms are. Hope this helps
