Subject: Has anyone had this happen?
Several weeks ago I noticed the date and time were giving out strange
numbers: i.e. 1956 and a time that wasn't relevant to anything I coud
figure out. It may have happened as the result of a/an virus..I am not a
'rocket scientist' when it comes to computers (or anything else, for that
matter)
I tried to 'fix' it and ended up having the entire system 'crash'
My son got the system back up but the time and date are still 'goofy'.
I try to reset it and it is all right until I turn off the computer. When
I turn it back on it is back to 'crazy' time and date.
Would appreciate ANY suggestion you might have!!!
Thank you,

I have a strange request. My Uncle saw a picture in a newspaper
clipping. It was a stone supposedly along the OREGON TRAIL with the name
WILLARD on it.
1-Can anyone point me in the direction to find any informaiton
about who travelled this trail ?
2-Does anyone know of a WILLARD that went on the OREGON TRAIL ?
Although we descend from Simon WILLARD I am certain we do not have this
person in our direct line. This is more out of curiousity. I know the
newbies here will do their best.

My first question would be have you checked the computers battery?
I have seen some very strange things happen in computer circuits when the battery goes bad.
I am answering this via the list so others can see it.

Nancy,
Your clock problem could be caused by the battery on the main board,
(keeps the clock ticking when PC is turned off). On most units its the
same type of battery that wrist watches use. Some are solder on the
boards, while others snap in/out. Either way you should've gotten some
type of warning message when turning on the machine. Hope this helps.

I am searching for Joseph WRIGHT who lived in Hawkins County, TN in
late 1890's to 1900. Joseph was sent to an orphanage along with two
sisters, Cora and Effie Wright after their mother died. Joseph was
adopted a short time after arriving at the orphanage.
Rumor was a family from New York adopted him.
Anyone have any thing on this?

Is there anyone on the list from Onslow Co., NC??
I want to find out when marriage records started being kept, and if
someone could do a lookup for me if there is an index. I have no real
idea of date of marriage, except that it was some time between 1880 and
1893. My g-grandparents were Sue/Susan/Sudie MASHBURN/MARSHBURN, and
Charles CAMPBELL. I know that she was born in 1873, and that her
parents were Henry and Tabitha MASHBURN/MARSHBURN. My g-gm always said
she was a MARSHBURN, but her family was always listed as MASHBURN in the
census'.
Any help would be appreciated on this search.

RUN, don't walk to your nearest computer store and get a replacement bios
battery. The loss of date and time is the first thing that indicates this
battery is getting weak. If you don't take care of it before its completely
gone, you stand a good chance of loosing everything you have. The bios
controls the hard disk settings and other system requirements. You can
usually see these by pressing the Delete key or some other key (your manual
should say) during INITIAL stage of boot up. I would do this just to get to
those screens and do print screens of every one. Then you will have the
settings just in case everything goes south.

Subject: More info about 'clock @ date problem'
To everyone who responded to my plea for HELP!! regarding my computer's
date and time:
1. I ought to have said I have a/an Mac Classic II (bought 'reconditioned')
2. When I told my son about the problem (after I 'crashed' the system) he
said he thought the original problem was the battery BUT he couldn't find
any battery.
3. Because I bought the Mac 'used, it doesn't have any manual.
4. The opinion of everyone on the list was that the problem was due to the
battery. Now, all I have to do is figure out where the little guy is
hiding.
5. I think I will call the Mac repair man. Might be safer!! I don't
think my son would be too happy to have to get 'Mac' up and running so soon
after the last time.
Thank each of you so much for responding to my question and not
'snickering' about it ;-)
God Bless!

I recently received disappointing news that my great uncle's WWI military
records were part of those destroyed in the fire at the National
Personnel Records Center in 1972.
My great uncle was a Veteran's Administration counselor after the war.
Is there a way to obtain copies of his employment records and possibly
his military records from the VA? I have checked the VA's web site, but
I found no information regarding obtaining information for genealogy
purposes.
Is there a particular regional office that I must contact?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lynn's mention of persons putting in the wrong characters for her email
address reminded me of something that you all should know.
When you are doing any type of search, whether it is through your messages,
a CD rom (like the Family Tree and Everton's disks), the online queries
(like the online Social Security Death index, etc. always be SURE to try
different variations of the same thing. Even though you KNOW it is an alpha
O the person who keyed it in may have put a numeric 0; same with some of the
other letters -- I often see 5 for S, etc. the lower-case letter L is
sometimes picked up as a numeric 1, etc. Check q for g, and vice versa.
Check 1 for lower-case Ls, etc.
This may make the difference in whether or not you find what you are seeking.
And remember that these machines are not all the same -- some are extremely
case-sensitive -- a "S" is NOT the same as a "s", a one is not the same as a
small L, etc.
Hope this helps someone,

Well, I'm doing a time-honored, traditional midwestern February rite: I'm
getting out of here! I'm leaving on Friday morning for a long overdue
visit with my parents (who seem to remember nothing, so they're of little
genealogical help, but lots of fun to be with!). I'll be back on Tuesday
evening, with full mailboxes, I'm sure.
If you're having mail problems, or other woes, and it can keep until
Tuesday, I'll be happy to help. If it is a serious mail problem, drop a
note to and she'll try to fix it. Karen is a very busy
person, but willing to help.
And, our library's internet connection picked this week to act up. I cannot
access my email at work, so please forgive any delays!

Sounds loke you may need a new battery for your internal clock. That is
how the computer "remembers" the date after power down. I would suggest
that you ask your computer technician for assistance.

I am not a Mac expert or any other kind for that matter, and certainly not a
computer expert, but if you need a manual, get on the internet and find the
Mac customer service or repair place and order a manual. Just use any of the
search engines and search on computers or Mac. You'll probably get more info
than you know what to do with.
Good luck!

California. Would you believe that no one wrote any names on the back of
the picture? There are 33 easily identifiable individuals on the Pic.
Prove to me that we are on the same branch and a copy of these pics are

Hi Newbies:
Could someone help me. I would like to know what is a .gid extention and

Do I need it? Also the .cnt. What exactly are they for? I read through

I know some of you old timers who are use to computers could possibly answer

Also all the logs that I have. Are they necessary?
