Subject: JERVIS-HASLAM

After lurking for a couple of weeks, I've decided to put my first post out=
here and introduce myself.

I have just started researching my family tree, so I'm a total newbie at=
this. I've gotten as far as my great-great-grandfather and then "life"=
(the usual stuff) has prevented me from getting to the library again to=
research further.

I am researching the JERVIS and HASLAM surnames right now. And I've gotten=
to this point so far:

JERVIS, William John -- b. Dec 1849 Canada (Eng) - d. unknown. Wm. John had=
a wife named Mary (maiden name unknown) who was born Mar 1851 in Canada=
(Eng). They had 4 children as follows:

JERVIS, William John Jr. -- b. Apr 1873 New York - d. unknown

JERVIS, George A. -- b. Feb 1875 New York - d. unknown=20

JERVIS, Charles Henry -- b. May 10, 1880 New York - d. Abt Jul 1965 in=
Yonkers, NY. He married Ruth HASLAM and together they had 2 children.

HASLAM, Ruth -- b. Jan 2, 1889 New York - d. Aug 1978 New York. Ruth's=
parents are supposed to be German immigrants. I have looked once in the=
1900 Census for them, and didn'tfind them (I must've missed them).

JERVIS, John Bloomfield -- b. Dec 14, 1795 Huntingdon, NY - d. Jan 12, 1885=
Rome, NY. Parents were JERVIS (or JARVIS), Timothy and BLOOMFIELD, Pheobe=
(Phebe). John Bloomfield JERVIS was an American civil engineer who worked=
on the Erie Canal, and designed the Stourbridge Lion, the first working=
locomotive in the United States. He is the founder of Port Jervis, NY. I=
am hoping that someone out there has a biography on John Bloomfield JERVIS=
or a family tree on him. =20

Are any of these people in your family tree? Are you researching any of=
these family names? If so, please email me. I haven't been able to find=
even one person that's researching these surnames out on the web.

Thanks,

Debbie

Dear Judy,
What you probably heard was in reference to the soundex, the indexing system tha
began in 1880.
In the 1880 census, the only families that were included in the census, were
families that had a child or children under 10. So, if the folks you're looking
for in the 1880 census, weren't living in a household with children under 10,
they were not indexed and you will have to find them the old fashioned
way.....page by page.

Sorry the news isn't better.

Beth and fellow Gen-Newbies,

DALnet is an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) network. It's real time chat without=
the same screen refresh delays that chatting across WWW has. There are=
many different IRC networks out there, DALnet is one of the most popular=
ones.

It doesn't require alot of computer skills. It does require special IRC=
software which can be downloaded free from WWW. One of the most popular=
IRC software for PC users is 'mIRC' and it can be dowloaded from=
http://www.mirc.co.uk/

Once you install the software, it's just a matter of choosing DALnet from=
the connect menu and the software connects you. Once connected, you can=
type /join #Genealogy-help and once again, you will be connected to that=
channel (chat room).

For more information on IRC try the following sites:

Dalnet #newbies - The Ultimate IRC help channel

For some IRC related links visit my IRC page at:

I hope this helps. I look forward to seeing some of you in #Genealogy-help=

Hi all: Being a real newbie, can anyone give me information on
purchasing software? I have an old DOS version of F-edge and am
wondering if there are updates. I would like to know what you all
think. What is everyone using and how do you like it. Can the data I
have in the old F-edge be copied on to any new sofware or would it all
have to be done manually?

Hi All,
I'm back! But, not full force yet. If I haven't answered you mail
please except my appology as I'm only answering mail that pertains to me.
Nothing wrong just pressed for time. Things aren't much better here
although we are told that the Ohio River will crest by morning at 14 feet
above flood stage. The other problem is our sewer systems are all antiques
and unable to handle all of this water. So what the rivers and streams
haven't flooded the sewer system has. Some phone, electric, cable and water
is off. Many, Many roads are closed. Hotels and motels are packed.
Shelters are filled and homes completely submerged. What isn't water logged
is muddy.
My husband's out in that boat again, helping the others, while I'm
here trying to keep things in tact. The water is in the houses a block from
me have water one foot deep now. May have to leave myself if this rain
keeps up. Don't worry I'll find somewhere to plug in my modem!!!!!!
Am I addicted yet?????

See Ya!
Pat

P.S.
I'll try to keep you posted as often as I can. Thank-you to all the
concerns and prayers, they have been greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

heard of F-edge. I use Family Tree maker and like it for just about

Okay, first I asked about printers (HP 693C won out...who's got the

talking something no more than $300, flatbed, bundled with OCR software.
I don't know much, if ANYTHING, about these gadgets. I'm lucky I know
where the "on" button is. Is 300x600 TRUE dpi pretty decent? We're
talking color, single-pass. I've seen one for $299, $269, $219 and one
for $199, but no software. I undertstand that you can fiddle with the
color resolution via software up to 4800 dpi. O/S is Win 3.11. Any
ideas???

Carolyn -- since you knew about this maybe you could answer a question for
me on these 1880 census' -- the Univ. of Minnesota collected 1% of the
population/census and they compiled it; I used the thing and changed it so
readable, and could look things up, and there is an online link that also
does this so it is viewable online (a bit hard to maneuver but once you get
the hang of it I find it is wonderful). Now, is this that they did only 1%
of the entire USCensus, or was that only 1% of the entire microfilm? Well,
that doesn't sound right -- let me try again. Is the 1880 census of the
entire US population or only 1% of the population (the microfilm'd one)? Is
this 1% that UofMin did 1% of the microfilm'd one? or the entire microfilm
digitized? I can't seem to find the answer and haven't access to an 1880
microfilm to compare what I have for the county with what is on the microfilm.

If anyone knows this in the gen-newbie list I would appreciate knowing.

Thanks for your help,

Pam,

The March 4, 1997 issue of PC Magazine has a feature article on
scanners. Lot of basic info and a reveiw of several scanners. Read it
online at:
http://www.pcmag.com/features/scanners/

Other sites:

I am considering the UMAX Vista-S12 with a street price of about $500.

I have not used it but there is a URL described as follows: The goal of
this connection to all types of adoption resources is helping children
discover their birth parents. But, whether this is your interest, or
you are an adoptive or prospective adoptive parent, you'll find
everything from adoption laws listed by state to where to look for birth

Sue,
Contact the company who made F-edge and ask them if there are any updates.
Usually when you start the program, or somewhere in documentation, readme,
help, etc. files it will have company name and you can usually locate
address and phone number from that. They can tell you whether or not they
have made any updates or if anyone has made any programs that works with
their product.

In regard to the different genealogy programs:

If you have DOS and no Windows program, I believe Personal Ancestral File
(PAF) is a good choice. It is still highly recommended for beginners. One
of the advantages with PAF is that there are users groups throughout the U.S.
that meet regularly to help you with PAF and with other genealogy related
problems. Also, many features are available with PAF because utility
programs have been written to add greater flexibility. I must admit that I
wish PAF could import pictures, but for storing and organizing my genealogy
data, and for ease of sharing it with other people, PAF is great.

Judy,
I am not familiar with the work done by the University of Minn, but I don't
really understand your question.
Let me add some exciting news about the 1880 census.
The Family Search Program on the LDS computers is the main search program. New
"chapters" are being added all the time. The newest project being digitized for
addition to Family Search is the 1880 US Federal Census!!!
That will surely help us all!
