One method I use to see which lines need work is to create a circle tree. It
consists of concentric circles, with me in the middle (good for the ego
right?). My parents are in the next circle, granparents third, etc. I have
filled in names and BMD dates. I always enter the male ancestor
counterclockwise of the female. I have even numbered the spaces following the
ahnenfatel system (eg. I am 1, dad 2, mom 3, dad's dad 4, dad's mom 5, mom's
dad 6, mom's mom 7, etc, dad's dad's dad 8, etc) The innermost circle is about
2" in diameter with each circle being 3" larger in diameter than the previous.
Dad get
s the top semi-circle, mom the bottom. Each radial line you draw extends
outward, with the following circle dividing the previos segments in two. This
is similar to the FTM fan tree, except that there are no line connecting
generations. The circle shows several things. Each half is either maternal or
paternal. Each quadrant shows the ancestors of one grandparent. (I have
colourcoded all my material based on these quadrants.) At a glance you can tell
the genealogical lines that need more work. My circle is currently 9
generations, but that is as big as my compass will go - I need another
extension... I can cross reference the numbers on my chart to my program where
I store these numbers for each individual. I have posted it on the wall near my
computer for this reason. It even creates a conversation piece when I have
guests over - they think it is really neat, and it is easy for others to
understand. I believe this is the best way to show many people in the smallest
amount of space.

BTW - I do my tree on new newsprint taped in the middle for lots of room for
expansion.

I hope this gives everyone some food for thought.
