Cookies are very useful little bits of data that identify you to web sites you visit regularly. They tell the computer at the other end that you are you and then the site adjusts itself to match YOUR preferences. They are very useful with email and some search engines out there where you customize them to match what you want.
The way the get on your computer is the site at the other end sends them to your browser and it saves them.
When you go to the site again, it asks your browser if it has a cookie for that site, if so your browser will send it to the site, the site will "think" Ah, it's Clara, let's set up the way she likes it.
Without the cookies, you would have to log in as a NEW USER EVERY TIME. That would be very inconvenient especially for a web email site.....
Hope the above gives you a bit of an idea of what cookies are and how they can be useful.
L8r,
Gus
