Ken,
If an immigrant or poor person did this, would it show on his Pension
Records or Service Records that he was paid to take someone's place? I have
a german immigrant who, together with his brother, enlisted for 1 year. I
had always thought it was to gain legal citizenship as that was offered to
men who signed up for a year or more. Perhaps I was wrong and he and bro
took "someone elses" place..... Interesting. I just can't help but feel
that they would never have enlisted in a foreign war out of "loyalty" to
their new country. Both had families to care for and had emigrated to AVOID
conscription.

Joyce

This one I can answer I have a friend who lives in Montana + he is a history
teacher his subject is
civil war so I hope this answers your question SLC.

A person drafted into the union Army could actually pay someone to go in
their place. It was relatively common for upper class and even uppen middle
class people to pay money to a poor person (sometimes immigrants especially
from Ireland) to go into the army as their replacement.

bye ken:)
