Thanks everyone for sharing your memories. I liked Phil's especially. About
war memories---A niece complained because her father never shared. It seems
to me that when families and old friends get together, the older ones
reminisce and have a great time, but the children are off having their own
idea of a good time. I remember some visits my parents had with brothers and
sisters. Did I listen? Of course not. Anyway, it's hard for a child to
figure out who's who. My children are still trying to figure relationships
with their father' s nieces and nephews and their children. Some of the
nieces and nephews were the same age as his younger brother and sister.
Well, my niece was given war time letters from my brother, and she edited
and wrote a very good memoir type piece. So she did learn of her father's
war time experiences. My sister, selected and forwarded parts of her
husband's letters during WW11. Although his infantry units took part in
landingas and battles in Europe, his account sounded like a travelogue! My
husband was in army engineers, a pontoon bridge company, in latter part of
Pacific operations. I have his letters, but they're not as interesting
writing. Never thought my kids should read them.

I like historical fiction too. James Eckert and Alexander Thom wrote of
French-Indian War era. Thom wrote "Follow the River" Now I see references to
the Ingles in southwest Virginia in other histories. He also wrote "From Sea
to Shining Sea" that follows the Clark family from George Roger's exploits,
and a brother's imprisonment by British (gruesome) to Lewis and Clark
expedition.
Good luck to all, and greetings from Oregon. Helen
