Hello Dee,
Welcome to Gen-Newbie! I assume from your description you have downloaded a
Gedcom file for an individual from the Census area of the LDS site. Those
files are for the most part useless from what I have seen. You actually get
more information on the individual's listing. However, if you want to use
one of them you must create a new family file first and then import the
gedcom file into that. You DO NOT want to import it into your main file. If
it turns out to be useless information it could be hard to get rid of.
I would suggest highlighting and copying the information out of the on
screen display from the census at Familysearch.org and the paste it into a
word processing document. If you need help with copy and past you can find
it at Brian's web site:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~besley/basic.html
Click on number 14. It describes the keyboard shortcuts to accomplish this.
You can also "cut or copy" by right clicking on something after it is
highlighted to copy and place the cursor in the location where the paste is
to occur and right click and select paste.
John

Subject: LDS search
| Hello everyone. Another newbie here. I have been watching and hopefully
| learning for several months now. Now, my problem. I went into the LDS
site
| looking for my g-grandfather in Wisconsin. Found a list on possibles for
his
| mother but don't know how go further. I was going to follow directions to
| open but the next thing I knew it was going to my FTM program. Scared
myself
| when this happened so I just cancelled. Any suggestions here, please.
|
| Also, am going to my first genealogy society meeting tonight at the
Flint,
| MI main library. It promises to be good as it will focus on newbies.
|
| Thank you all. I Love this group. Blessings on all.
