I have found valuable info in Civil War enlistment and military papers
in the Adjutant General's offices in various States. My gr grandfather
enlisted with the Illinois troops and although I couldn't find anything
about him in NARA, the Illinois Adjustant General's office sent me a
copy of his enlistment record. It opened the door for me to info I'd
been unable to find elsewhere.
The Adjutant General's offices are in the State capitals.
