I was hired at age 14 to work at a local YMCA for 3 hours a day after
school Monday to Friday. Minimum wage was $3.35 an hour and that is what my
hourly wage started at. It was same Y that I went to every summer for summer day
camp since age 8.
I for a very short time as a maintenance assistant then was employed for
the summer through the Mayor's Summer Youth Program. I immediately went to
the Daycare Unit and was given the 3 messiest kids to take care of. They were
the messiest in every way you can think of. I persevered and did it all with a
smile on my face.
I didn't realize that I was being monitored and was being graded on how
well we all worked. The only thing I cared about was that I had a job and
wanted to keep it! I was the only one there to receive the highest score possible
out of those that were working there through the program and was invited
along with other teens who did just as well to have lunch with the Mayor at City
Hall.
The Y hired me after the summer program was over to work behind the desk
there until they were closed down 2 years later because of lack of funding.
