I went to work at 18 while living in NJ. I was fired from my first job as a
switchboard operator because I didn't have the temperament. Never mind that
they were impossible people expecting you to do ten things at one time.
Moved to MD and went to work for "Circle Bar W", Westinghouse to those out
of the know as a dictaphone operator. Because of a bad hearing problem I
really couldn't do the work, so they put me on the switchboard (a double
board). I was monitored by the telephone company and got excellent grades
in all areas. I didn't stay in that job but was promoted and ended up
working for them for 38 years all together.
I retired in 1990 and the Company went kerplop. They are no more. I got
out just in time, although I like to think it was because of me.
