It is true the information on Martin Ault is sketchy. What I have is
sketchy.
I don't even know what religion he was. He married twice, both in
Lutheran churches, but his first wife and he were buried in Catholic
cemeteries, so he must have converted somewhere. I have at least 15
addresses for him, and children of his first marriage were born in 4
different towns. His first wife was buried in a fifth. His second wife
was my grandmother, who never spoke English well, and died when I was
1. He died when my father was 4, and my father died at 42. I am really
short of info.
His parents names were gotten when I found him in an 1860 census, and I
hope it is the right Martin Ault, but there are so few I am hoping it is
him. He never owned property, and left no will. I have seen both
marriage records, but the weddings were in 1880 and 1895, and record
keeping was not as extensive then. He was one of those people so poor
he came under the radar.
I have my parents' death certificates, but my father died too young for
social security. (He was a storekeeper, and they were not covered until
the 50's.) In addition, half his family was not speaking to the other
half. I have info on most of the children of the second marriage, but
the info on Martin's death certificate was given by a son who knew
little and gave information that looks erroneous.
He is a big brick wall, and I am shooting arrows into the air hoping for
something: like where might his parents have come from and when.
