If you have not installed the plugins with Irfanview you are missing many
of the types of files that Irfanview will handle. It is a long list that I
will not post here but you can find the list of plugins at:
http://www.irfanview.com/
Then click on "Plugins" which is the fourth item down on the left side.
Down at the bottom of this page is a list of all the plugins. I am sure
some will say I don't need this or I don't need that. I suggest that you
won't know what you need. I certainly don't know exactly what graphic file
types I will encounter. One brief example is the plugin called DjVu.dll. I
had no idea what this was until I wanted to download some maps from the
State of Washington (secretary of state) site that required that format.
Back at the top of the Plugin page the first method of download is to
download the files from Tucows as an .exe file. I would suggest this method
as the one with the least complications. I always suggest closing every
thing in your system tray before installation. After that is done, just
double click on the download link under number 1 and select a download
location near you. Once you select a specific download location it will
begin download. Save it to your desktop (it's easy to find here). Once the
file is downloaded (it's 4.8 MB), just double click on it and it should
install very quickly and then you are done!
Last comment. . . Elaine said she accepted the "offer" of using all the
file associations. This isn't a bad idea. If you find a certain type of
file is associated with Irfanview that you don't want that way it is very
easy and quick to go in and "un associate" that file type. It then will
revert to the way you had it before. One of the real beauties of Irfanview
is that it handles more file types than anything. As far as graphics go
this makes it so you can open a jpg (jpeg) that tends to be very "lossy"
and save it as file type that isn't to make your edits. I've recently been
using .png at the default 6 compression. It works much better than jpg.
Have fun. While you are at his site, Irfan has listed a number of very
interesting links of his favorite software, tools, and imaging sites.
