In a message dated 98-01-28 14:48:30 EST, you write:
<< Growing up in Rochester in the 40's with the canal literally in my back
yard,it was commonly referred as the BARGE CANAL. The reasons for this are
obvious but was this strictly a local thing?, was it called this in other
areas of the state ?and if so, where did that name originate ???? >>
Wait a minute! The Erie & Barge Canals are two different canals - after they
split at the tip of Cayuga Lake (or thereabouts). The Erie Canal continues on
towards the west, following the NYS Thruway for awhile. The Barge Canal goes
from Cayuga Lake west to Seneca Lake and I'm not sure how much further. The
Barge Canal runs thru Seneca Falls, Waterloo and on to Seneca Lake. There are
Locks along the way. This is not an 'official' response, but from one who
resided in the area of the Barge Canal. I'm sorry to say I never found out
exactly it beginning or ending point.
