Subject: Marriage Customs circa 1870

Hi Folks!
Can anyone tell me what marriage customs regarding religion were circa
1870?
Specifically, if the Bride and Groom were of two different religions, would
not the Bride have married in the Church of the Groom's religion?
Ie, if the Groom was Lutheran and the Bride Dutch Reformed, would the
marriage have most likely taken place in the Lutheran Church? Or would
they have most likely married in the Dutch Reformed?
Or,,,, being of two different religions would a marriage have been totally
frowned upon in the era of 1870 and the couple would then elope?
Thank you for any insight.
