Roy:
You were taken in by a 19th century myth. From what I understand, it was
manufactured by the Babylon Conklins to "prove" that they weren't related
to the Huntington Conklins.
>From Conklin Mann's series in TAG [Honor has given us the complete
references] pp. 228-231 [unfortunately the xeroxes I have lack the date of
the issue] Jacob Conklin is #18, the son of Timothy, and grandson of John,
one the the "ur-fathers" of the NY Conklins.
Jacob was born 15 March 1676/77 at Huntington. He really was a pirate with
Capt. Kidd [at least according to Conklin Mann] Mann says "About 1850, some
member of his family made a genealogical illumination in which no attempt
was made to cover up the fact that Jacob Conklin sailed with Kidd, but only
to disassociate him from other Huntington Conklins." Mann calls this "an
interesting example of Victorian snobbery." Most of what he quotes is what
Ray's story covers.
I guess if you lived in Babylon it was better to be a pirate than be
related to people in Huntington!! :o)
I guess I really can't take sides ... on my grandmother's grandfather's
side I descend from #15 Timothy Conklin [b. 1670] and on her grandmother's
side from this Jacob #18 ... both brothers, son of Timothy & grandson of
John.
But the facts are clear ... Jacob Conklin & his large family of descendants
in Babylon and on the South Shore of Long Island are part of the Huntington
Conklin family.
I hope this helps.

David

Hello Conklin researchers, I have been sent this information recently from
a cousin, I am trying to find out if anyone has actually looked into the
Capt. Kidd story and knows of the possible "Others" who were to have been
with Jacob Conklin. OR lead me in the right direction as to where I could
find out some information on this.
Thanks,
Debi Starr

Descendants of Jacob Conklin
Generation No. 1
JACOB1 CONKLIN was born Abt. 1675 in Wiltshire, England2, and died 1754
in Babylon, Long Is., NY. He married HANNAH PLATT3. Notes for JACOB
CONKLIN: P. 976 - A History of Long Is., NY - Babylon: " 'The
oldest house in town' writes Mr. Cooper, 'perhaps in the county, is
situated near the Huntington line. It was built by Captain Jacob
Conklin, who was impressed on board of Captain's Kidd's ship and served
under him on of his voyages. On Kidd's return from his last voyage, and
while his vessel, the 'San Antonio,' lay in Cold Springs Harbor, Conklin
and others, having been sent on shore for water, hid themselves and did
not return to the ship. Doubtless they feared Kidd's arrest and trial,
and dreaded lest they might be punished with him. They were for some
time secreted among the Indians. Conklin purchased a large tract of
land from the natives, of which the farm late the property of Colonel
James F. Casey is part, and upon which the venerable mansion above
alluded to is situated. The house was probably erected about 1710, and
every part of it bears evidence of its antiquity. The high hill behind
the dwelling commands a splendid though distant view of the ocean and
bay. Near by are several find springs of water, one of which is said to
be of medicinal character.
'Captain Jacob Conklin was born in Wiltshire, England, probably in 1675,
and d. at his residence in this town in 1754. His wife was Hannah
Platt, of Huntington, by whom he had several children, amoung them
Colonel Platt Conklin, who was an ardent patriot during the Revolution.
The latter had only one child, Nathaniel, who was Sheriff of the
county. He was the third owner of the property above described. This
property descended to the grandchildren of Sheriff Conklin, thus having
been owned by four successive generation of the family. It has since
been owned by Dr. Bartlett, formerly editor of the 'Albion,' Colonel
James F Casey, and Ulysses S. Grant, Jr.'
The village of Babylon has an existence of about a century, and seems to
have originated in a saw mill and a flouring mill built in the closing
years of the eighteenth century, although there is a local tradition
that the first house was erected about 1760. In 1801 Nathaniel Conklin
built a tannery and a cloth mill was begun by Timothy Carll about 1810."
