South is Putnam Co, which was once part of Dutchess. North is Columbia
Co, East is Litchfield Co, CT (with Fairfield Co to its south). Across
the Hudson to the west is Ulster Co.

Most of the migration I'm aware of went from Fairfield and Westchester
(next south from current Putnam) to Dutchess and then north and west,
with some going northeast into VT.
