I suggest three things.
1. Call your main branch of your library system and see if they have anything
on the development of the Erie Canal.

2. Write to New York State Archives
Cultural Education Center, Room 11D40
Albany, NY 12230
Tel 518-474-8955
E-Mail
URL http://www.sara.nysed.gov/
URL http://unix6.nysed.gov/holding/fact/genea-fa.htm

3. try this New York History Net
http://www.nyhistory.com/

If all this fails -- let us now what area of the state you are specifically
interested in and I can look up Historical Society addresses.

There are also many Erie Canal boat rides you can take and they are a stocked
with tons of information. I know there are two different boat rides in the
Rochester, NY area. I don't know the names of the rides to call them though.
:( One is in Penfield, NY

Hope this helps.
