Upstate New York is "UPSTATE". Meaning the entire state North of the New
York City limits. All of us 'Upstaters" always refer to ourselves as living
in upstate NY. Whenever I travel to other states, I am asked where I am
from, and I tell them New York. they automatically reply, "New York City"?.
My answer is always "No! Upstate New York. I live in Syracuse".
Although they don't understand what upstate means, they usually don't ask
any other questions.
