Hi Bob,
See below, a line I found in a Civil War Site:
Bidwell, John S. Age 21. Pvt Co G; promoted Sgt May 30, 1861; reduced to
ranks Oct 8, 1861;
promoted Sgt Feb 23 1863; also borne as John H. Bidwell"
