Candlelight Tours of Historic Sherwood House
December 14th
4:30 to 5:30 pm
Take a break from the fast pace of the holiday season and experience
the unique charm and history of Sherwood House. Enjoy a candlelight
tour, seasonal greenery, holiday cookies, and hot cider.
Our docents will open a window to the past to offer a glimpse of
Christmas traditions followed by the families who lived in Sherwood
House through the years.
Sherwood House, located 340 Tuckahoe Road in Yonkers (at the southbound
entrance to the Sprain Brook Parkway), is one of the few remaining
pre-Revolutionary War tenant farmhouses in the New York metropolitan
area. It was built about 1740 by Thomas Sherwood on land leased from
Frederick Philipse and was purchased in 1801 by Yonkers’ first
physician, Doctor John Ingersoll. Listed on the National Register of
Historic Places, Sherwood House, is lovingly owned and maintained by the
Yonkers Historical Society.
These Candlelight Tours are by reservation only; to walk through the
pages of history, call the Yonkers Historical Society at 914-961-8940.
