Hi Jane.

Sorry to say I opened up my mouth and put my foot in....I should've realized you had so much experience. I've only been doing it myself for 10+ years now and of course I know everything by now. Not!

Sounds like you've done an excellent job of hunting him down with what records are available to you. I think I can help with at least two steps toward finding him: 1) I have the Newspaper Archives subs. service which I will search for you, and 2) I belong to the New England Historical and Genealogical Society which offers us members some free query time with their experts. Since they are local to the general area and of course their extensive records, let's see what they have. Let's hope it works. (Since the NEHGS, above, is not open today, I'l try them tomorrow or the next day.) By the way, I'm just passing on some favors that other gene-researchers have done for me in other areas.

Talk soon.

You mention Mortality Schedules and I can't find that Heading on the FH Library Catalog listing for New York City. I do see Records of coroners office but there is a gap from 1864 - 1868 so my 1866 records would fall in that gap. Then LDS also has films of Manhattan death certificates covering my time frame which I shall order for the time period of March 1866. Since I think this "unknown man" could be Andrew Heinlein I will begin checking the certificates with 7 March which was when the body was discovered. I have also tried to locate any New York City newspapers which might have mentioned this as the Coroner's jury suggested the mayor offer a $500. reward for the apprehension of the parties who shot him. I cannot find the papers on Ancestry or Godfrey Library and they are the only ones I have.
