We are presently looking for information as to the parents of Amasa White, or additional information on him. According to a journal which was kept by my grandfather, George Leon DeBourney WHITE, Sr., his grandfather, Amasa WHITE, was born in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, in December, 1787, however the information on the headstone of Amasa WHITE, Sr. in Woodlawn cemetery at Sandy Creek indicates that he was born in 1785.
Amasa WHITE, married Martha (Polly) TYLER, who was born ca. 1803, in Massachusetts, the daughter of John TYLER and-?-. We are unsure of the age of Polly TYLER. People of this family are found in Sandy Creek, Oswego County, New York census records for 1840, 1845, 1850, 1855, 1860, 1865, 1870, 1880 & 1892 state census. Some are found in the 1851 Military Census of Sandy Creek.
Daniel WHITE, was born ca. 1822, NY;
Jane WHITE, was born ca. 1820-1825, NY;
Dennis WHITE was born ca. 1826, NY;
John WHITE, was born ca. 1828, NY;
Mary WHITE, was born ca. 1830-1835, NY;
Amasa WHITE, Jr., Sep 9, 1838, Sandy Creek, Oswego, NY.
After Amasa WHITE died, his widow, Martha “Polly” WHITE, married (2) James B. BRIGGS, ca. 1841, and had one boy, Orson M. BRIGGS, born ca. 1843, in Sandy Creek. James B. BRIGGS was born ca. 1785, in Vermont. The Sandy Creek News for February 6, 1930, says that James B. BRIGGS was the grandfather of John TUTTLE.
I found a listing for Polly BRIGGS in 1880 in Lisle, Broome County, New York, but have no evidence she is the same woman.
It has been a while since I have inquired about this line. If anything looks familiar, drop me a note.
