This is not an uncommon occurrence with women of relatively
obscure origins who attain a socially prominent position.
Unlike all the princesses in the Gotha whose dates of birth
are easily obtained, those whose origins are less well-known
have had the "luxury" of inventing or hiding the precise details
of their personal history. The Duchess of Oporto springs immediately
to mind. From what I've been told, Beatrice Bordessa (Bourbon-Sicily),
Nancy Leeds (Greece), Elena Lupescu and Ioana Doletti (Romania),
Dorothy Haydel (Liechtenstein) --and many others whose names don't
spring to mind at this moment-- may have also toyed with what I
call "autojuvenation."
