Split is the current name. When Split was a territory of Genoa first,
and Venice later, it was called Spalatus (the Italian name, in fact, is
Spalato). That is the period I refer to (1415), so the ancient Latin
documents should use that name, obviously, not the current one. I do not
see any reason why someone should feel offended because I use an ancient
name of town. In any case no offense is intended.
By the way, I do not offend if an American calls Roma "Rome", or Napoli
"Naples". My *personal opinion* is that thinking that Croatian people
may be offended because I used both Spalato and Split *is* an offense to
intelligence and civilization of Croatian culture. I do not trust the
"politically correct" mentality. Often it is just hypocrisy.
