Subject: [GEN-TRAVEL-US] Back from PERRY Co. PA, thanks for your travel suggestions

My mom and I just returned from our very first (but certainly not the
last--we're hooked!)family research trip. We went to Perry County
Pennsylvania and had a great time. Solved a few mysteries and of course,
discovered quite a few more.
Thanks to all of you, especially Lois, Joanne, Angela, Robbie, Lila,
Ellen, Debbie, and Donna, for your tips. We found few to be ESPECIALLY
helpful:

1. Take candy or some kind of small gift for those who helped you. We
could not believe how kind everyone was, and how many people went out of
their way to help us. You will be glad you at least brought thank you
cards along.

2. The self-addressed, stamped envelopes really came in handy, too.

3. Loved the travel journal idea. We just sent notes home via email to
our families and used this for our journal.

4. Sticky notes really came in handy, too.

5. We took rolls and rolls of coins, but none of the places we went to
had coin operated photocopiers. The ladies who worked at Perry
Historians bought our rolls of quarter, however, looking for the quarters
they needed to fill their collection of states quarters. They loved us!
(The Denver mint had issued several states before the one there in the
east.)

6. Wish we would have taken a scanner. There are several available, I
understand, for around $50.00. We made $80.00 worth of photocopies at
various libraries!!!! (And that was at only 20 cents a copy.)

7. Try Motel 6. It was clean, comfortable and didn't smell. We
understand they are starting a "Studio 6" for travelers staying at least
4 nights. Their suites will have kitchenettes, dishes, etc. and be very
reasonable. There are about 50 of them available throughout the country
right now. Our regular room had phone jacks for our laptops, 2 queen
beds, and was only 39.95 a night. A bargain. We found one about 20
minutes from where we did most of our research.

Anyway, there is nothing like going to the place where your ancestors
actually lived to get what you need. We're planning to return in the
spring.

Thanks again to all of you for your tips!
