So, in part, you did get to do what you were good at ... I know that's not
quite the same as what you *wanted* ... :-( ..... But I bet you got more out
of it ...
I don't remember growing up with a *longing-desire* of what I wanted to do,
but after I'd joined the St John Ambulance service, when I was about 10 or
11, I did know that I wanted to be in the nursing profession .. My Mother
was totally against it ....
After I left school I *did-as-I-was-told* & for a few months worked in
various office jobs, ranging from punch-card-operator to typist to accounts
clerk ... Then I became a Signal Centre Operator & also a Driver ... But my
heart was elsewhere ... I did eventually do my nurse training, much to my
Mother's disapproval, & ended up doing a job that I loved very much ... My
Mother never fully understood why I loved it so much ... Oh well, her loss .

I wanted to be a professional footballer with my beloved Spurs.......and I
still do:-)
Unfortunately, this type of job didn't come through the Labour Exchange, or
newspaper employment vacancies adverts; so I opted for the Police Force, or
the HM Customs Officer. When a hearing specialist told my Mum that I would
never get any job where a medical is involved; and, I didn't have my Dad to
guide me, I opted for pen pushing.
Looking back, and now knowing what talents & skills I have or had without
realising it, I could have become a newspaper columnist-cum-photographer;
and/or an events organiser/administrator at a very high level.
At least I was given the opportunity in my lifetime, to use these talents
and skills as an amateur(unpaid) and a volunteer at local, regional, and
state level. That was in effect, my otherwise unpaid "Brilliant Career":-)
