Well, I have to say that I agree with Howie 100%. Like him, I detested all
compulsory school sports including PE and swimming. I was never any good at
any of them partly because I had not the slightest interest and partly,
again like Howie, because I suffer from poor hand/eye coordination. To my
mind *compulsion* in anything is counter-productive. School sports in my
case was certainly so because rather than show myself up as being completely
useless in front of my peers I used to play truant. I didn't want to miss
school as I liked most academic subjects but the thought of sports sessions
made me feel physically sick, and I mean *literally*. I longed to be able to
do something like extra music classes on sports days but wasn't allowed to.
To this day I detest being 'organised' and instinctively rebel against any
suggestion that I *have* to 'do this' or 'go there'.
I've noted the comments of others that compuslory sports teaches one to
become a 'Team Player' and to be competitive. Fair enough, it most certainly
does - for *many* - but human beings are all different and there is no such
thing as "one size fits all". In my opinion to be a team player is to be a
part of the herd where the strongest, most able, or in extreme cases most
vicious rises to the top. Most of the greatest people throughout history in
virtually every field of endeavour are however, the free-thinkers, the
individualists, the 'radicals' if you like, those who eschew the herd
mentality ands are able to determine what is best rather than what is best
for the team even if the team gets trampled in the process.
Finally, I don't believe that it is being *competitive* that gets you the
job, or whatever, it is *incentive*.
Geo. kicking aside the soap box.
