hear hear Maggie....
I play Scrabble because I love to make words - we always end up helping each
other to get better words out!
m
To be honest Sue, I play to enjoy the game. I don't care whether I win or
lose. If I'm playing as part of a team then I pull my weight but if playing
cards, scrabble or whatever then it is just for the fun of it.
I'm not materialistic at all. Before I buy anything I ask myself firstly,
can I afford it. Secondly do I need it thirdly and probably the most
important, will it improve my life and give me pleasure. Never do I
consider what people will think of me because I have bought
something..........but, as you say, some people do. I like to think people
like me because I am a nice person and not because of my material
possessions. People must be very insecure if they think that people like
them just cos they have a new car or house or whatever.

===========
But isn't competitiveness what life's all about George .. ? ......
We preen ourselves to compete with other people to get the best possible
partner ---- just as others in the animal kingdom do .... Bet you've never
observed the ladies loo in a pub or nightclub .. ? .... LOLOL ... Watch em
preen themselves --- it's just wonderful to watch --- a real education ...
You'd not catch me doing it though --- but there again -- I'm quite past it
these days ... :-))) ....
Don't companies compete with other companies to be the best in their field
---- best equaling more & more profits .... ??? ........
Some people --- not me mind --- compete to be the first person to get a new
car each year ----- first with the new number plate ...
Some people actually enjoy entering endless competitions each month -- we
even have magazines that help them do it ..... A friend of mine's brother
actually won a week's holiday in Euro Disney --- cos his wife was a
competition addict ... LOL ....
The Guiness Book of Records exists purely for people who like to compete ---
doesn't it ... LOL ...
Whether we see it as Competition or use another word ---- it's what keeps us
going ..... :-))) ....
Come on - be honest --- do you really play games (board or field) & not care
whether you win or not .. ? ... I like to WIN ---- but I don't throw a
paddy if I don't ... URGHHHHH ..... LOLOL ....
Sue
It matters not whether or no qualifications are required, Sue. I've never,
in any field of endeavour, considered myself to be 'competing' against
others in such situations. As I said though, it's probably just semantics,
our differing interpretation of the meaning of the word. From my point of
view, if I regarded life as an endless competition I'd have ulcers by now.
<vbg>
I've never conciously tried to be the 'winner' or the 'best' at anything. To
my mind, life's too short for that. I simply try to be as good at anything
as I am able for my *personal* satisfaction and if others are better <shrug>
c'est la vie. I don't consider it a defeat and I certainly don't lose any
sleep over it.
