Mum had done so well since the op in Dec. She stayed with us over Christmas
and then went to my sister until just after the New Year. She then insisted
they could cope alone and cope she did. She religiously did all her
exercises and the hosp were surprised at how well she had got back to doing
most things for herself - but then Mum is like that. Very determined and
disciplined, she is.
Dad had a few days in hosp as a result of his heart medicines but Mum coped
well on her own and managed the journey to and from hosp (12 miles)by taxi
as well as looking after herself.
3 weeks ago Mum had a fall and twisted/tore some muscles in her groin and
was unable to walk so taken into hosp. I went down to collect Dad from the
hosp and stay with him a couple of days and then my sister came down to take
over so I could go back to work. Mum was let out with a zimmer a few days
later and after a couple of days my sister had to go home again. Next day
Mum instinctively turned and something went worse inside her leg and she was
stuck - couldn't move or put any weight on her foot .... back into hosp she
went .....the day we had gone to Maidstone. Dad wouldn't have us go back to
Bexhill and was determined to cope alone but he was already tired from doing
extra jobs around the house and with the travelling 12 miles each way by
taxi to Hastings (he doesn't drive that far now)he reached a point where he
knew he could not cope any longer. The weather was so bitterly cold that he
could not go out and about because of his angina. Mum was moved from an
orthopaedic ward to a geraitric ward on the Wednesday and she hated every
minute - she may be 83 but she has all her marbles and normally is sprightly
and on the go continuously (that is where I get it from). Dad was really
upset to see Mum in the company of 5 old ladies who did not appear to be "on
this planet". Last Thursday he rang me at work to say he was booking into a
hotel from yesterday (Monday) and he agreed to me ringing the social workers
at the hosp to try and get Mum moved back to the local cottage GP hosp
because he was so upset about the geriatric ward - what went on there is
probably best not talked about. I encountered a lot of red tape .... and
the answer was no .... funny that within 6 hours she had been
transferred!!!!
So Friday I was supposed to be on leave for something at Church but went
down for the day to do washing and cook his meal before being taking him to
see Mum, then back to the flat to get his tea before coming home - at least
it gave him a day of not having to think about jobs.. Sister went down the
next day and did the ironing as well as visiting Mum and then Peter and I
went Sunday to do some cleaning and to visit Mum and pack his suitcase for
the hotel. I also brought the rest of the washing home .... and will go
back next weekend to do a swap with the rest with this weeks dirties. He is
lonely without Mum in the hotel but at least he only has to worry about
getting up and getting ready for bed .... everything else is done for him.
He is looking forward to Mum joining him for a period of convalescence when
she is discharged, but he dreads her being discharged too early again (the
hosp admitted that they discharged too soon the first time) particularly as
both Eastbourne and Hastings are close to shutting A & E because of no bed
spaces.
Mum has moved on to two sticks now but it is still painful to walk and she
needs to take it gently, but she is getting good physio in this small hosp
and progressing slowly but steadily .... all exercises carried out with
military precision.
So to answer your question Jean, she had been doing really really well.

Sorry to hear about your Mum, Liz. How are she and your Dad since her *op*?
