Hi Ecee,
I was close to the area you mentioned on Friday and Saturday. Now, I am
back in Wisconsin! While I was there, I visited some towns east of the
areas you mention. You may have some luck with records since your family
left in 1873. The civil records starting in 1855 have more information
then the Old Parish Records(OPR). I was able to go back 1 more
generation with information from death certificates. There is a mining
museum in Newtongrange and a great local studies center in Loanhead.
They are very helpful! Also, look through this web site, it has tons of
great info.

The email for the local studies is .
It is definitely worth saving your pennies for a trip to Scotland. I
have been researching my family for 20 years, and promised myself a trip
when I knew where they were from. I have the Brown family back to
Alexander Brown born on February 27, 1792, in Inveresk, Midlothian, to
Robert Brown and Margaret Reid. Being in Gorebridge where my great
grandfather lived as a boy was very special. We were treated like family
by the owners of NewByre B&B in Gorebridge! I located an article about
the mining accident in 1874 that killed my g-great grandfather, David
Peacock Brown. We visited his grave at Newton Parish and unexpectedly
found a Scottish wedding, with bagpipes, kilts and a horse and carriage
for the bride.
I am still searching for the family of David Brown's mother, Janet
Beveridge. I believe she may have been from Inveresk.
Good luck in your search,
Peg
