Hi all,
like a sleeping giant in a cave, I heard my name being mentioned and thought
I'd better come out to play! Actually for once someone beat me to it and I
read an excellent reply on Islay.
However my turn to ask. I work with Family Tree Maker which is excellent
except when trying to follow the instructions in Help when attempting
something for the first time. I have lots of family trees set up on my
programme. Someone was kind enough to send me a GEDCOM programme family file
on a subject we both have an interest in. I downloaded it on to a floppy
successfully. So far so good. I then tried to transfer it from the floppy
into my FTM programme. I managed to put it in "My Computer" with the result
that when I tried to open my FTM programme from the "Start" button, it only
opened this new family tree which I had received as a GEDCOM file. I
therefore had to get into "My Computer" delete the file and send it to the
recycle bin in order to get my FTM programme back. the printed instructions
were totally useless. I accept that they are written in American English and
"anorak" language, but they could just as well be in Greek for they were all
Greek to me! Could SKS please take pity on me and send me instructions
(idiot proof) how blow by blow I transfer the file into my FTM programme
thereby creating a new family tree within my existing FTM programme with the
GEDCOM file I have on disk. I shall be eternally grateful and promise to
keep giving free history lessons, albeit only at the weekend since I am away
all week.
All the best,
Mark

P.S. I am reading about the Jacobite Clans of the Great Glen at present,
brilliant book but very very heavy reading.
