O.K. Here's one. It's from the Lanark mailing list of 3 Feb.
"David BROWN writer to signet d Castle St. Edin 29 Jan 1836. Christian
BROWN res Castle St., Edin sister german defunct."
'Defunct' obviously means 'finito', 'done- for', a goner. Right? It's
the 'german' that's got me baffled.
