I have read everyone else's mystery, now here's mine:
My ggrandfather, Edward Euler, is a mystery man. The family story is that he was left as an infant on the doorstep of a pastor's home. The pastor's family took him in, and after exhausting all avenues to locate the mom, raised him as their own. He was a wanderer all his life, coming home for several months until his wife was pregnant, then leaving town again. We have no idea when he died or where, only the continued story that he died in Walla Walla, WA or OR..
The few facts I have gathered seem to support the story. Edward appears in York, PA in the city directory in 1882. His naturalization papers are from Canada. He married Mary Ann Blum in York in June of 1887, and they had 8 children. According to the 1900 census, Edward was a song peddler, but had been unemployed for the past 12 months. His birthdate is also listed as Dec, 1855.
At the same time Edward appears in the city directory, a Rev. John G. Euler appears at the same address (home beyond the PBRR).No record of pastor's wife. The pastor is in the city directories in 1890 and 1892, but then disappears. This seems to indicate that Edward and John arrived together, then John died or moved.
A search of Canada's 1871 census shows a Rev George Euler living in Waterloo, Ontario with wife Roxy and a son Edward. Seems to be a possible match, except that Edward's age is listed as 11. There is a horizontal stroke after the "11" which may be the top to a 7 that the census taker wrote without paying attention to where he was writing. The census lists George and Roxy as married in 1859, which means Edward may have been brought into the marriage by one of the parents. Searches of Waterloo area reveal several Euler graves, but no Roxy.
George/John was a Lutheran minister from Germany. Requests to the Lutheran conference in Canada have yielded no replies.
Anyone have any ideas about how to confirm or deny these 2 families are the same? Or locating Edward and Roxy's death/grave information?
